Q&A

Is neem any good to treat fleas we have a flea plague at home with 1 cat and two dogs? Is is safe to spay around inside the house?
Yes, you can certainly use neem spray around the house as a natural flea repellent. Use the Dog Wash Concentrate and dilute it at the rate of 5ml to 500ml of water in a spray bottle. Wash the dogs (and cat if possible) first, using the concentrate in your shampoo and conditioner and then spray the dogs, cat and around the house with the spray. Take care if you have small children crawling around as neem tastes very bitter! Also, take particular care where you spray as neem is a vegetable oil and will cause the floor to become slippery. We have a litter of pups who are being plagued by flies. Can I use the Dog Wash Concentrate on them?It would be perfectly fine to use on young pups. The only time I would advise against using neem is on pregnant bitches. I would suggest using a stronger mix of the Dog Wash Concentrate by mixing 10 - 15mls to 1L of water. Use to spray the area you keep the pups in, their bedding and also the pups themselves. Hopefully this will do the trick. We also sell a neem ointment called NEEM SALV-ATION which is a 50% concentration of neem oil and this could be applied to the puppies' ears and on their backs to ward off the flies as well.

I was wondering if I could use this product on my sheep to stop fly strike and ticks?
Yes, I would definitely recommend this product for your sheep, especially if you want to avoid the use of chemical treatments. The main ingredient in this product - neem oil - while repelling flies and ticks, will actually help soothe areas on the skin that have already been affected. Our NEEM SALV-ATION would be an ideal product to use if you require a thicker, balm-type product.

Can you use neem whilst pregnant or breastfeeding?
Neem falls under the category of herbs known as "emmenagogue". These herbs can encourage blood flow to the pelvic area and encourage menstruation. It is for this reason that it is best not to use neem products when pregnant or planning to become pregnant. Breastfeeding, however, is another matter and there are indications that it is fine to use neem products while breastfeeding (see www.growinglife.com/herbalsafety.htm). The percentage of neem in the body oil is 5% which is low. Also, women in India, once they wish to finish breastfeeding, often apply a paste of neem leaves to their nipples to discourage the infact from feeding! However, if you are slightly concerned, my short answer would be to err on the side of caution and not use it.

I have read that neem should not be given to infants or children. Is this true?
Neem should NEVER be given to children or infants, internally that is. Neem is a potent oil and I would not recommend using it neat on children with one exception. In the case of head lice, it can be used neat on the hair and scalp and left on for about 10 minutes. As with any product, I would test it on a patch of skin first to see if there is a reaction. In the case of head lice, the neem oil can be (and I would recommend) diluted with olive oil (50:50) and applied to the hair this way. It will still kill the lice and nits and is preferable to the chemicals that are on the market that are absorbed through the skin and to which the head louse is becoming resistant anyway. Finally, neem oil is a natural vegetable oil but with potent qualities. Even lavender oil is potent. It just smells much nicer than neem!
